FINAL  TMDL Implementation Plan for the Pigg River and Old Womans Creek Watersheds

Presentation from Final Public Meeting held on February 19, 2009.

A TMDL Implementation Plan is being developed for the Pigg River and Old Womans Creek watersheds. An informational meeting for local agencies was held May 1, 2008. The first public meeting was held June 5, 2008 at The Franklin Center, Rocky Mount, Virginia. A meeting of the residential working group was held August 14, 2008 at the Franklin Center. A meeting of the Franklin County agricultural working group was held on October 30, 2008 at the Franklin Center. A meeting of the Pittsylvania County agricultural working group was held on November 6, 2008 at the USDA Center in Chatham.

This project includes the development of an implementation plan for the Pigg River and Old Womans Creek watersheds for bacterial impairments.  The Pigg River basin is 392 square miles in area and is located in Franklin, Pittsylvania, and Henry Counties of Virginia.  The Old Womans Creek (OWC) watershed is 13 square miles in area and is located in Pittsylvania County. The Pigg River, Snow Creek, Story Creek, and Old Womans Creek watersheds are all part of the Roanoke River basin. The hydrologic units composing the watersheds for each stream are: Pigg River, L14-L18; Snow Creek, L17; Story Creek, part of L14; and Old Womans Creek, part of L13. Big Chestnut Creek corresponds to hydrologic unit L15. The Pigg River watershed (to which Snow Creek, Story Creek, and Big Chestnut Creek are tributaries) stretches across Franklin County and into part of Pittsylvania County, covering the northernmost point of Henry County. Old Womans Creek, adjacent to Pigg River, is located entirely inside Pittsylvania County (See figure below).

Forest lands comprise about 74% of the project area.  The rest of the area is divided into agricultural (25%) and residential (1%).  The Pigg River basin includes seven watersheds, three of which contained impaired segments at the time the TMDL was developed (Pigg River, Snow Creek, and Story Creek watersheds). The other four watersheds (Doe Run, Big Chestnut Creek, Tomahawk Creek, and Harpen Creek watersheds) were considered in the TMDL study because they contribute flow and bacteria to the impaired segments.
