Four stream segments in the North Fork and South Fork of the Pound River have been listed by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for benthic, or biological, impairments. The first set of meetings in the public participation process for identifying causative pollutants and developing total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) for pollutants causing the impairment have both been set for January 30th, 2007 and will be held at the Pound Town Hall at 8422 N. River Road in Pound, Virginia as follows:

3:00 - 5:00 pm Technical Advisory Committee Meeting

7:00 - 9:00 pm Public Meeting

The Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) Department at Virginia Tech has been contracted by DEQ to conduct the TMDL studies on these stream segments and their associated watersheds. Copies of the materials to be provided by BSE at both meetings are attached and can be downloaded by clicking on the file names.

This forum is intended to provide another avenue outside of the public meetings for stakeholders to provide comment on the process and to assist BSE in understanding the characteristics of these watersheds and the possible nature of these impairments. your comments to this post and other posts to follow are most welcome.
