Hi everyone!

The final public meeting date has been set. We’ve been chugging away at the watershed characterization and modeling based on feedback from the technical advisory committee meeting in February and finally have some results about ready to show you!

The final public meeting will be held on September 17th at 7 pm at the Cedar Bluff Town Hall (115 Central Ave, Cedar Bluff, Virginia).

We’ll be presenting the reduction scenarios we’ve determined from modeling and handing out copies of the executive summary of the TMDL report. A little closer to the meeting time I’ll have the full report available for you to download here, so check back in a couple weeks.

As some of you may have heard, I have actually moved to England at this point, so my boss, Dr. Brian Benham, will be presenting the information at the public meeting. I hope you’ll all come out and hear what he has to say!

Hello everyone!

First, let me introduce myself. I am Becky Zeckoski, a research associate in Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech. I am a member of the Center for TMDL and Watershed Studies here. I will be leading the development of the bacteria TMDL for Indian Creek.

The first technical advisory committee (TAC) meeting for Indian Creek will be held on February 22nd at 3 pm at the Cedar Bluff Town Hall (115 Central Ave, Cedar Bluff, Virginia). At the TAC meeting we will be discussing the methodology for data collection and analysis in detail. For example, I will discuss how we go about estimating animal numbers for the TMDL. Even if you don’t consider yourself a ‘technical’ person, if you have good knowledge of human and/or animal populations and activities in the watershed, please plan to attend this meeting to help us develop better estimates for the watershed! We also look to the TAC to give us good people to contact to get more information on various topics. So if you know about people who know a lot about the watershed, we will appreciate it if you can share their names.

The first public meeting will be held on the same day (Feb. 22nd) at 7 pm, also at the Cedar Bluff Town Hall. The public meeting is more of an information-sharing event. We’ll present whatever estimates we have ready at the time and a very broad overview of our methodology for the TMDL (much less detailed than the TAC meeting). We welcome feedback on anything and everything related to the TMDL at the public meeting.

Both of these meetings are open to anyone who is interested in attending. As the meetings draw closer and I have more information available, I’ll be posting the handouts for the meetings up here on the forum, so check back closer to the 22nd!

Four stream segments in the North Fork and South Fork of the Pound River have been listed by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for benthic, or biological, impairments. The first set of meetings in the public participation process for identifying causative pollutants and developing total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) for pollutants causing the impairment have both been set for January 30th, 2007 and will be held at the Pound Town Hall at 8422 N. River Road in Pound, Virginia as follows:

3:00 - 5:00 pm Technical Advisory Committee Meeting

7:00 - 9:00 pm Public Meeting

The Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) Department at Virginia Tech has been contracted by DEQ to conduct the TMDL studies on these stream segments and their associated watersheds. Copies of the materials to be provided by BSE at both meetings are attached and can be downloaded by clicking on the file names.

This forum is intended to provide another avenue outside of the public meetings for stakeholders to provide comment on the process and to assist BSE in understanding the characteristics of these watersheds and the possible nature of these impairments. your comments to this post and other posts to follow are most welcome.

Hello All,

The first Local Steering Committee (LSC) meeting was held yesterday (11/08/2006) at the Thomas Jefferson Planning District in Charlottesville. Watershed characterization information was discussed. Specifically, population data for different bacteria sources were discussed and additional input is requested from stakeholders. Please go to the Hardware River TMDL website at http://www.tmdl.bse.vt.edu/outreach/C105/ and download a copy of the handout from the LSC meeting. We are looking for to your input.
